In an ever-expanding industry, women have the upper hand in the cannabis space. Making up roughly 63% of high-level positions, the market is young and the traditional barriers for women do not exist.
To celebrate Women's History Month we cultivated a list of six women paving the way in different sub-sectors of the cannabis industry worth keeping an eye on.
Heather Molloy, CFO of Jane West Enterprises
Heather is a board member, advisor and investor at Jane West Enterprises, where she offers vital financial and operational leadership. As the owner of Ulu Capital & Consulting LLC, Molloy advises medical and recreational cannabis businesses including dispensaries, cultivators, and processors. She also consults with investors deploying capital in the cannabis space. Drawing on a successful career in regulated industries including insurance and financial services, Molloy employs strategies and insights uniquely suited to help cannabis businesses succeed in a dynamic regulatory environment.
Ashley Picillo, CEO and Founder of Point Seven Group
Ashley is the founder and CEO of Point Seven Group (Point7), a women owned and operated consulting firm based in Denver, Colorado, Sonoma County California and soon, Los Angeles, California. Point7 specializes in pre-license cannabis consulting by supporting Clients from coast-to-coast in the development of application and licensing materials, marketing and branding, SOP development and post-licensure operations. The Company expanded in 2017 to add cannabis facility design, equipment selection and product formulation and development to its mix of services and is growing rapidly in alignment with spreading legalization and is continuing to develop a portfolio of services and products to better support their clientele. Ashley is also the author of Breaking the Grass Ceiling: Women, Weed & Business, a biographical collection that has garnered national media and industry acclaim.
Christiane Campbell, IP Partner at Duane Morris
Christi is a an IP attorney who works with clients on the development, management and protection of their brands. In the cannabis space, she counsels clients on selection, clearance, adoption and protection of brands at the state, federal, and domain name levels; coordinates with clients to develop brand enforcement programs, including enforcement against unauthorized use of brands on social media; and advises clients as to federal and state-specific rules and regulations relative to trademark protection, licensing, packaging, advertising, and marketing in the cannabis space.
Dr. Junella Chin, Integrative Cannabis Physician at MedLeafRx and Manhattan Osteopathy
For over a decade, Dr. Junella Chin lived and practiced medicine in California, a state with legalized medical marijuana since 1996. In California, her integrative family practice clinic focused on children with intractable epilepsy, cancer, and autism. She has seen firsthand just how much medical marijuana can benefit patients. A Bronx native, who moved back to New York three years ago, Dr. Chin is now registered with the New York State Medical Marijuana Program. She is currently treating both children and adults in New York.
April Pride, Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Van der Pop
As a creative entrepreneur, April’s career is marked by a distinct aesthetic, innovative design and authentic brands. Her most recent venture, Van der Pop, is a lifestyle brand in the emerging cannabis space. As of January 2017 - one year from launch, she sold Van der Pop, which is part of the portfolio of brands under holding company Hiku Brands, which also includes Tokyo Smoke and DOJA Cannabis Company. With this acquisition, she continues to manage the brand from its Seattle headquarters and, also, has assumed responsibility as Chief Creative Officer for all TS Brand Co. portfolio companies.
Paige Cecchi, Founder of Sigma & Style
Paige Cecchi is on a mission to end the stigma surrounding cannabis worldwide. A fierce networker who embraces opportunity, she has served as a trusted strategic advisor, confidant, and source of industry expertise. Paige recently joined forces with her sister, an accomplished accessories designer, and her lifelong friend, to launch Stigma & Style: an online retailer for the fashion-forward cannabis consumer. Stigma & Style taps into lifestyle trends and imagery from the forefront of a stylish new cannabis culture. She is also focused on diversifying her portfolio and creating positive social change by investing time, expertise, and capital in passionate entrepreneurs and female-led teams who are leading the way as cannabis enters the mainstream.
