On Friday, September 8th, S&P Dow Jones Canadian Index Services announced that as a result of the annual review of indices, there would be some changes made to the constituent companies that make up the S&P/TSX SmallCap Index. While there will be over 40 new companies added to the list, there will also be over 30 companies removed from the list. As you will see below, there are handfuls of mining-related companies being added and removed from the S&P/TSX SmallCap Index. What really caught our eye was the marijuana stock that was being added!

Companies Being Removed
The new cannabis company being added to the index is CanniMed Therapeutics Inc. (TSX:CMED) (OTC:CMMDF). It's a huge deal for stocks whenever they're added to a widely tracked index. It's going to be a while until we see a pot stock in the Dow, but we've already seen handfuls added to the CSE Composite Index in Canada. Just so you're aware, these changes will become effective prior to the open of trading on Monday, September 18, 2017.
