How Medical Marijuana Can Help Patients with Arthritis

August 7, 2017

What Exactly is Arthritis?

In actuality, arthritis is not a singular condition.  Arthritis is a wide-reaching term that describes roughly 200 different rheumatic diseases that effect the joints as well as their surrounding tissue.  Additionally, arthritis can cause serious stiffness and inflammation.  These symptoms may develop gradually, or abruptly and can be debilitating.

What Are the Causes of Arthritis?

There are many causes of arthritis, and it can occur in people of all ages, from children to senior citizens.  Sever arthritis can make it impossible for people to work, and leave them truly disabled.  In fact, in the U.S. arthritis is the number one cause of disability.  Normally there are high levels of stress and depression associated with arthritis as well.

Some of the potential causes of arthritis include genetics, obesity, joint damage, and more.  Even an infection can be the root of the problem.  Some forms of arthritis can even stem from dysfunction in the immune system and an abnormal metabolism.

What are Some Treatments for Arthritis?

Some more commonly used treatments for the pain include Tylenol, Vicodin, and other pain killers. The problem with the previous examples is that they don't treat the inflammation that is associated with arthritis, which is why some alternatives that people prefer include non-steroidal over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, or Motrin.

If one suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, they are likely to treat it with anti-rheumatic drugs that actually prevent the bodies immune system from attacking the inflamed joints.

Is Cannabis a Viable Treatment for Arthritis?

Studies have shown that marijuana has the anti-inflammatory effects that sufferers from arthritis so desperately need.  Many are starting to see it as a fantastic treatment, and it is quickly gaining popularity.  Combine cannabis' ability to ease pain, and the fact that it doesn't have any of the life threatening side effects that are associated with the alternatives (NSAID and opiates), and it makes the plant arguably one of the best treatment options available today.

  • ACDC - this sativa-dominant hybrid has a lot of CBD in it, but is great for general pain and discomfort. For more intense arthritic pain, try one of these other strains.

  • Blackberry Kush - this Indica is great for pain relief, not great for operating machinery... be careful taking a toke of Blackberry Kush before you head into work.

  • Harlequin - According to Leafly, "Harlequin almost always develops a CBD:THC ratio of 5:2, making this strain one of the most effective out there for treatment of pain and anxiety, as CBD can counteract THC’s paranoia while amplifying its painkilling properties."
