Marijuana Stocks On The Toronto Stock Exchange

May 25, 2017

While a great majority of the marijuana-related stocks out there trade over-the-counter or on the other Canadian exchanges (TSX Venture and Canadian Securities Exchange), there are a few cannabis companies (and one ETF) that are listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

All three of the marijuana stocks currently listed on the TSX are Licensed Producers under the ACMPR

The Companies:

Canopy Growth Corp. (TSX:WEED

Canopy Growth Corp. is billed as the first marijuana industry unicorn with a market cap hovering around $1 Billion USD at the time of this writing. Canopy Growth Corp. was also the first cannabis company to be added to the S&P/TSX Composite Index

Aphria Inc. (TSX:APH)

Aphria describes itself as one of the lowest cost producers because of their greenhouse growing method. Aphria has also invested in numerous cannabis-related companies, including Canabo Medical and Resolve Digital Health. Aphria is also making a push to enter the U.S. through their investments in DFMMJ and related agreements with Florida licensed producer, Chestnut Hill Tree Farm.

CanniMed Therapeutics (TSX:CMED)

CanniMed was the first cultivator to be licensed under the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR), the predecessor to today's ACMPR. For thirteen years, their wholly-owned subsidiary, Prairie Plant Systems was the lone supplier of medical marijuana to Health Canada. CanniMed has also completed an export of cannabis oil to the Cayman Islands, and was the first company to export commercial cannabis oil to Australia

Horizons Medical Marijuana Life Sciences ETF (TSX:HMMJ

Although not technically a stock, the Horizons Medical Marijuana Life Sciences ETF is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Additionally, the three other TSX listed cannabis companies are all constituents of the North American Medical Marijuana Index, the index that HMMJ seeks to track.

As the industry continues to blossom (especially in Canada) we expect to see more marijuana companies going public or up-listing on the TSX.
