On Sunday, U.S. Customs agents working near Rio Grande City, Texas spotted a pickup truck speeding away from the river. When the agents responded, the driver turned back south and drove the truck into the river. When agents got to scene, the pickup had partially sunk, but 79 bundles weighing 1,350 pounds were seized from the pickup truck.
A few hours later, agents conducting patrol duties near Los Arrieros, Texas located suspicious footprints leading into a brushy area. Agents followed the footprints and discovered 36 more bundles of marijuana, weighing almost 800 pounds, abandoned in the brush.
The two busts by Customs resulted in a total of 2,148 pounds of cannabis being seized with an estimated street value of over $1.6 million. In the end, no arrests were made in either incident.
It was an active weekend for marijuana busts by U.S. Customs, with another 67 lbs. of cannabis seized from a white hearse full of weed.
