In duffle bags, one pilot transported roughly 230 pounds of hydroponic marijuana from Oregon to Texas. This pilot is now under arrest after a few failed landings throughout Texas.
What tipped off the authorities? Well according to the release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas: "HSI agents were prepared to interdict Brunet last night as he attempted to land at an unmanned airport in Bulverde (TX). The Department of Homeland Security Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine Operation Center (AMOC) began tracking the single-engine plane after observing that it had a suspicious flight pattern from Medford, OR, to Texas and had landed only once in Holbrook, AZ, to refuel."
To make things even sketchier, the pilot also attempted landing in Bulverde and Lago Vista, but then would bail after realizing authorities were waiting for him on the ground. Even once he was caught at the Llanos Municipal Airport, the pilot tried to run when authorities finally stopped his plane.
After seeing authorities at every stop, he took off to evade them. The 64 year old pilot, Wayne Douglas Brunet, is being charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. This is going to get him somewhere between 5 and 40 years of prison time. He'll be held in federal custody while he awaits his hearing tomorrow in Austin.
