Rest in peace Chuck Berry, and no, I'm not referring to the strain of weed. In case you haven't already heard, the amazing artist behind songs like Johnny B. Goode died a few days ago. Chuck Berry is most well known for killing it on the guitar playing his memorable songs about all kinds of cool stuff.
Since everyone else is talking about Chuck Berry's music and legacy, the question we're asking is...was Chuck Berry a cannabis consumer?
It's commonly known that many rockstars like to smoke their fair share of weed. From Jimi Hendrix to Ozzy Osbourne - handfuls of rockers have been known to enjoy a joint now and again to say the least. But Chuck Berry's relationship with weed is complicated.
Back in early summer of 1990, police near Wentzville, Missouri raided Berry's home on a cocaine tip. When the police raided Berry's home, there was no cocaine to be found. However, there happened to be more than an ounce of weed as well as a bit of hash, a few guns and a shit-load of porn and cash. I'm not going to comment on the guns, porn or cash - we're only interested in the weed.
Although he had a lot of marijuana and a bit of hash, he said it wasn't his. According to a November, 1990 article from the Associated Press linked above, Berry was holding it for a friend.
That's the oldest line in the book when it comes to possession charges. Watch any episode of Cops and you'll hear people say and do all kinds of crazy things just to avoid marijuana charges. Regardless of whose it was, Chuck Berry was charged with a misdemeanor and had to serve two years of probation for this marijuana charge.
According to the same article from the Associated Press, Chuck Berry said that he "has not (used) and does not use or possess marijuana or cocaine," but rather it was part of a plea-bargain to avoid charges stemming from some of the questionable porn he had in possession.
I'll let you decide whether or not you think Chuck Berry liked to consume cannabis, or maybe just happened to have more than 35 grams on him when raided. Regardless of the conclusion you come to, it's almost certain you'll enjoy listening to this video of Chuck Berry playing Johhny B. Goode live in 1958 below.
