Are Bongs Really the Best Way to Smoke Weed?

April 14, 2018

Yes, bongs are and always will be the best way to smoke marijuana.

You can try to come up with as many alternative facts as you want but, in my opinion, the bong is the superior way to smoke marijuana. Bongs, more technically known as water pipes, are scientifically designed to get you high and get you high fast. One hit out of your 6-foot long glass pipe named Lucile and you'll be couch-locked for hours binge watching Game of Thrones - I guarantee it.

Bongs have been around in human history for centuries. Thought to be a descendant of the hookah, the term "bong" comes from the Thai word "baung" meaning a cylindrical wooden tube, container, or pipe cut from bamboo. Many anthropologists believed Central Asia to be the origin of the bong since that is where cannabis originated but they were wrong.

In fact, there's archeological evidence of bong-like pipes being used for thousands of years in Africa. The nomadic tribes of Ethiopia and others in Eastern Africa developed the smoking mechanism for cannabis long before tobacco was ever introduced. The earliest discoveries, which date back to as early as 1100 A.D., were actually built into the ground. Lighted embers were placed at the bottom of a buried bottle and hemp was placed on top to burn.

The bong has come a long way from it's African origins. Gone are the days of burning embers in a hole in the ground. Glass is now the go-to for bong and pipe makers since it allows them to craft intricate and beautiful pieces.

Bongs are colloquially divided into two categories: the scientific and the artistic. Scientific bongs have a more laboratory look while artistic bongs play more with color, shape, and aesthetic. Once you pick a side, you're usually on it for life.

Using a bong is pretty self explanatory: after filling the bowl with grounded herb, you light it and pull through the mouthpiece. As the smoke fills piece, you pull the bowl out of the slide to clear the smoke. The taller the bong, the more room to fill with smoke.

What makes bongs particularly unique, too , is their use of water. Contrary to dry pipes, bongs contain a water chamber that is used to cool the smoke for a smoother draw. The water acts as a form of percolation, which refers to the diffusion and filtration process of the cannabis smoke. Many bongs come with a separate percolator to add a second filtration step. Percolators can even be added onto your piece if it doesn't have one already built in.

There's something very luxurious about smoking out of a bong. Bongs are like the Porsche's of the smoking world: if you have the money and are already part of the culture, you might as well go for the best.

Deciding which bong is right for you really depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a smooth easy-to-use, and intense piece, bongs are the way to go. The hard part is picking a name for it.
