Synthetic Cannabis Can Kill - Shelton, WA Man Nearly Dead

 The Breakdown:

  • A man in Shelton, Washington, J.J. Tomlinson, was in a 4-day medically induced coma following a hit of synthetic cannabis.

  • According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse - synthetic cannabis or synthetic cannabinoids "refer to a growing number of man-made mind-altering chemicals that are either sprayed on dried, shredded plant material so they can be smoked (herbal incense) or sold as liquids to be vaporized and inhaled in e-cigarettes and other devices (liquid incense)."

The Details:

  • Washington State Health Department and the Washington Poison Center say newer versions of the active chemical compounds found in synthetic marijuana (Spice, Cloud9, K2, etc...) keep showing up in new formulas for synthetic marijuana.

  • The new compounds are not yet outlawed, making them legal to sell and distribute.

  • According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse - "manufacturers try to sidestep these laws by changing the chemical formulas in their mixtures."

  • According to Tomlinson's mother Deanna - "the doctors said that if my family wasn't there, that he would have died on my living room floor. One hit and he would have died..."

  • The Tomlinson family supposedly hopes that this near deadly experience will be an eye-opener to others as well as reason to totally ban the products from hitting shelves.

  • According to the Washington Poison Center, there have already been a total of 17 synthetic marijuana problems this year.

  • Keep in mind that regular marijuana is legal in Washington. However, synthetic marijuana is not tested for in employee drug testing and more.
